THE TATARA

Smelting metal from it’s ore is a chemical process. In the Tatara, iron is won through reduction from an oxide: Fe3 O4. The chemistry is complex and involves charcoal as a heat source and reducing agent. Another crucial ingredient is the continually melting glass from the interior surface of the furnace. Thus the Tatara is sacrificial, built for a single use and broken apart to remove the iron.
