BIRCH SAPLINGSThese young birch trees are part of nature’s process for reclaiming cleared land back into forest. They are the beginning of what is called an early succession forest. Abandoned pasture became shrub land, the birches have now moved in and will last about seventy years. They create a protected environment in which maple, oak, ash, beech, hemlock, and pine trees can establish themselves and eventually become a mature forest.
